Individuals who endured abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope after their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," they stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has inherited this persistent issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to resolve the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which represents victims and advocates from over thirty countries, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

They added the leader was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have spoken with experts and compiled documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they informed the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," Hickey commented.

They added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
