England and Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
